Editor, Times-Union:I continue to be amazed at the lack of common courtesy in neighborhoods, in public, on our streets and highways.
My grandfather, Theodore Miller, died at the ripe old age of 95 in 1997. When I was born, he was well into his 50s, and when I was old enough to remember him, he was well into his 60s. He was a wiry little guy, the youngest of 13 children. I was reminded of Grandpa when discussing the upcoming "Down the Sawdust Trail," a historic re-enactment of the Billy Sunday crusades, with Steve Grill. Grill, executive director of the Reneker Museum, portrays Sunday, the fiery evangelist who made Winona Lake his home. Much of Sunday's ongoing popularity came from his dynamic personality and natural athleticism, which he used to advantage from the pulpit. Sunday was one of the finest baseball players of his day, a star Chicago Red Stockings player at the turn of the century.
- Leesburg Sewer Too Expensive Leesburg Sewer Too Expensive Editor, Times-Union: What does Leesburg have in mind for a city sewer system, when they are saying all must hook on and pay a $2,500 (at least) hook-up fee, plus $76-plus a month fee? Not very many Leesburg residents could even afford that much a month. Every bill you get has gone up $20 to $30 a month.Health insurance, prescriptions, doctor, hospital - everything is out of sight.Gas is outrageous, almost $3 per gallon, then NIPSCO said our winter bill will be at least 50 percent higher. When and where will all this end? Then they want Leesburg residents to cough up another $76 a month for a sewer system. You can only stretch your money so far! They better be looking at a program for about $30 per month.

Editor, Times-Union:When it comes to your health, who will you listen to, a doctor or an electrical engineer? KREMC says listen to the electrical engineer! On March 1, KREMC passed out a flyer stating Smart Meters were safe because an electrical engineer said so. On Jan. 19, 2012, The Board of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine said something quite different.

Editor, Times-Union:I am wondering if this country is bereft of its senses? For more than 30 years Islam has been at war with the USA. The killing of hundreds of our marines in Lebanon should have confirmed that. Killing Jews, Americans and Christians has been their goal. They state it often enough.
Editor, Times-Union:There is a disease that seems to afflict older people more than younger ones.
I can't imagine the depths of despair Brandon Robinson is feeling right now.The pain of knowing he was responsible for unintentionally killing three young people after drinking and driving last summer was compounded Friday when he was convicted in court and officially held accountable. Six months ago, Robinson was a carefree guy who had less than six months of adulthood under his belt. While thousands of underage people drink and drive and never face any consequences, Robinson unfortunately drove a truck that slammed into another vehicle carrying five people, three of whom died. I can't crawl inside his mind and relay his feelings.Only one who's been there can do that. But Robinson showed a range of emotions in court last week, all of which likely came from the heart. He shook uncontrollably during parts of testimony from survivors of the accident and he became visibly upset when a video of the crime scene was shown to the court.

- Puppy Mills - Basketball Compromise Puppy Mills Editor, Times-Union: Today in school we found out that most puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills.Puppy mills only breed dogs to make money. They don't treat the dogs well. They don't feed them properly. They don't give them enough attention or medical care and they are not kept in clean cages. Instead of buying from pet stores, please go to your local animal shelter to get a pet.Millions of dogs are in animal shelters because they have no homes.Yet puppy mill owners keep producing about 400,000 puppies a year.

- Teen Drunk Driving - Swope Accident - Alienated - Smoking Ordinance Teen Drunk Driving Editor, Times-Union: As a teenager I am concerned for the people on the road.At the age of 14 I realize others make mistakes while driving. But since when is drinking and driving a mistake? For some it is a death sentence for themselves or for others. It should not be that way, people should feel safe driving.People of today's society are not teaching their children the importance of the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol. As a teenager I realize there is a lot of peer pressure.I also realize you can say "no."I do not want to be killed by drugs or alcohol one way or another. That is why I am not afraid to admit that I have never tried anything.
