Editor, Times-Union: When it comes to your health, who will you listen to, a doctor or an electrical engineer? KREMC says listen to the electrical engineer! On March 1, KREMC passed out a flyer stating Smart Meters were safe because an electrical engineer said so. On Jan. 19, 2012, The Board of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine said something quite different.
They urged precaution because the evidence suggests there are health risks associated with Smart Meters. They noted “that current literature raises serious concern regarding the levels of radio frequency exposure produced by ‘smart meters’ to warrant an immediate and complete moratorium on their use and deployment until further study can be performed.”
They pointed out that “existing FCC guidelines for radio frequency safety that have been used to justify installation of ‘smart meters’ only look at thermal tissue damage and are obsolete.” They added that “many modern studies show metabolic and genomic damage from exposure to radio frequency and that current FCC guidelines are therefore inadequate for use in establishing public health standards.”
They stated that more modern literature show significant effects, both medically and biologically from radio frequency, even at low levels. These effects accumulate over time, which is an important consideration given the chronic nature of exposure from “smart meters”. According to these doctors, more “current medical literature raises questions about genetic and cellular effects, hormonal effects, male fertility, blood/brain barrier damage and increased risk of certain types of cancers from RF or ELF levels similar to those emitted from ‘smart meters’. Children are placed at particular risk for altered brain development, and impaired learning and behavior.”
Due to these concerns, they recommended the following:
• An immediate moratorium on “smart meter” installation until these serious public health issues are resolved, adding continued installation would be “irresponsible.”
• Provide immediate relief to those requesting it and restore the analog meters.
A total of 53 local governments in California alone have said “No Smart Meters!” Why? Because they are figuring out what the doctors have known all along, – they aren’t safe.
President Steve Rhodes, board members Joe Anglin Jr., William Stump Jr., Terry Bouse, Kim Buhrt, Pam Messmore, Rick Parker, Fred Powell, Tom Shively and Dan Tucker, will you force us to listen to the electrical engineer over the doctors? It’s been almost one month now, where’s the opt-out plan you promised?
