The hostess was Ruth Chapp. 25 Years Ago This recipe is for “Jewish Apple Cake” and was submitted to the Spotlight Recipe Contest by Karla Ellis, Warsaw. Ingredients: 4 large apples, pared and sliced thin; 1 cup chopped nuts or pecans; 3 tsp. cinnamon; 6 tbsp. sugar; 3 cups flour; 2-1/4 cups sugar; 1 cup salad oil; 4 eggs; 3-1/2 tsp baking powder; 1/2 tsp. salt; juice of 1 orange; 3 tsp. vanilla. Mix apples, nuts, cinnamon and 6 tbsp. sugar and set aside. Combine remaining ingredients in a large bowl. Mix on low about 30 seconds then on high for 3 minutes. Grease and flour an angel food tube pan. Alternate layer of batter with a layer of apple mixture, etc., finishing with batter on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 one hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes. 50 Years Ago The recent agriculture fair (a Friday and Saturday event) in Akron proved quite successful, capped by an Amateur Night program. Placing first in the contest were Kerry Flohr and Karen Miller, who received $25 for their vocal duet, The “Tonnettes.” A girls’ duet from Etna Green placed second and received $20. Third place and $15 went to David and Pamela Leavell with their song and dance act and the $10 fourth-place award went to Karen Hammond for her vocal solo. 75 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. James Thompson and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wise of south of Warsaw recently returned from a trip to California ... Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Catalina Island, Boulder Dam and the Grand Canyon. The trip covered 6,000 miles.
