    Warsaw banker Jerry Hull, a longtime hot air balloonist, took first place this week at the Indiana State Fair balloon contest.

This week's victory marks the first in five years of state fair competition for Hull. The contest, known as the "hare and hound" race, is an attempt by balloonists to be the first to drop a marker on a given spot four miles away.

August 12 1980

    Nancy Witt was the A-flight winner in a game of low putts at this week's Rozella Ford women's nine-hole club outing. Other winners were Ginger Smith in B-flight, Lorraine VerHage in C-flight and Helen Wallace in D-flight.


50 Years Ago

August 12 1955

    Keith Beeson, of Mentone, exhibited his Poland China barrow which was chosen 4-H grand champion at the county fair. Steven Kneller, of Silver Lake, won reserve grand champion honors with his Chester White hog.


75 Years Ago

August 12 1930

    There was frost on low ground in Kosciusko County early today, according to cucumber producers. Growers of pickles, however, say that no damage resulted from the frost.
