Kosciusko County Firemen’s Association presented the 2004 Fireman of the Year Award to Leesburg Assistant Fire Chief Mitch Rader, who decided to follow in his father’s footsteps 26 years ago. Mentone Fire Department Lieutenant Doug Miller, a 14-year veteran, was presented with the Distinguished Service Award for being active in the fire prevention program. Mentone Fire Department also earned the attendance award for the most members at county meetings.
Kosciusko REMC lead lineman Phil Adams and lineman Larry Bloom are leaving for Alabama Thursday morning after volunteering their assistance in restoring power to tens of thousands people after Hurricane Ivan ravaged the state earlier this week. They are among the 54 linemen and 27 trucks heading south.

Company A, 2nd Battalion of the 151st Infantry Regiment out of Warsaw, completed their two-week training at Camp Atterbury outside of Edinburg. Specialist Jeff Lawrence, Warsaw, and the others were graded on their performance in realistic combat situations.
One-year-old Brandon Bucher was the winner of the Farm Bureau drawing at the Kosciusko County Fair. Brandon is the son of Jerry and Cindy Bucher, Silver Lake. Roger Miller, president, presented him with a new tractor.
Jeri Hoskins, president of Alpha Beta Chapter, presented a $75 gift certificate to Sue Timmons, winner of Kline’s Back to School drawing.
Peg Callison was the grand prize winner of $100 from The Medicine Shoppe’s grand opening. Sandy Van Lue, owner and pharmacist, presented the award.

Phillip W. Neff is the new manager of the local Blue Bell Inc. He resides at 436 S. Columbia St. with his wife and three sons, two of which are twins.
    A2/C John Dzuba is spending a 15-days leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Dzuba, 907 Country Club Rd., and other relatives.
Virginia Logan, Pierceton, was named winner of a transistor radio in a contest conducted by the Boston Store.
A wounded Sand Hill crane was found near the W.E. Long home south of Syracuse. Conservation officer Earl Money took the crane to Tri-County State Game Preserve.

Lightning struck the tree under which six cows on the Hiram Hillery farm at the southern edge of Warsaw took shelter. Ben Detterman, ice truck driver standing nearby, was partially and temporarily paralyzed.
Driving of tractors and other motor vehicles with lugs on county highways is causing much damage, both gravel and paved. Kosciusko County Highway Superintendent Stephen Laughlin is threatening prosecution under the new law effective January 1939 stating that no motor vehicle equipped with tires, other than pneumatic, may be operated on the roadway.
