 The sound of the noon and 5 p.m. whistles have returned to Pierceton July 23, according to Georgia Tenney of Pierceton Community Services. Years ago, she says, the whistles were sounded each working day by the town clerk.
Allison Rock, Mentone American Legion Auxiliary Unit 425's 2005 delegate to Indiana Girls State, was the guest speaker at the July meeting of the Bell Memorial Library. “I had an amazing time at Girls State and thank the Auxiliary for giving me this opportunity.”

Nichols Scholarship winners: Kim Coverstone, Amy Engle and Elizabeth Irvine. The scholarship was established by the family in memory of Robert Nichols, a student at Madison Elementary School. Recipients are chosen by the Madison School PTO.
Betsy Sudhoff, Warsaw, has joined the staff of the Greater Warsaw Cooperative Preschool, teaching the morning and afternoon 3-year-old classes. She was an English teacher at Warsaw Middle School and presently teaches driver's education.
Gene Warner was hired as Claypool town superintendent effective Aug. 1.

Successfully completing the dog-obedience course conducted by Mrs. Beulah Cook at the fairgrounds: Christy Richhart and her wire haired terrier; Mrs. Michael Williams, Shetland sheep dog; Mrs. Colleen Miller, Spitz; and Mrs. Hilda Ruch, Bassett.
Linda Beigh, worthy advisor, presided at the meeting of the Akron Rainbow girls. Debra Groninger reported on the bake sale held in June.
Verl Gray became the new postmaster in Sidney June 1, replacing Mrs. Harold Malloy. Sidney houses a new 1965 fire truck purchased for Jackson Township. Harold Malloy is fire chief.

Miss Frances Sharp, history teacher for 31 years at the senior high school, and Miss Ina Stout, first grade teacher at East Ward for 40 years, are resigned to retire.
Donna Mellott, First National Bank, apologized for accidently striking Bob “Benny” Light, grandson of Councilman Wesley Light, with a baseball. One of her pitches went astray and hit Bob on the back of the head.
