10 Years Ago The 4th Marines hit the Japanese stronghold of Saipan the morning of June 15, 1944, under heavy artillery. One platoon was led by Don Frantz, now 87, who makes his home on Harrison Street in Warsaw. Frantz was seriously wounded, and was awarded a Purple Heart. Frantz became public affairs director for WRSW and a regular columnist for the Times-Union. He was named Warsaw’s “Man of the Year” in 1971 and was instrumental in establishing Kosciusko Community Hospital, the Leadership Academy and seeded some of the first greens at Rozella Ford Golf Course. 25 Years Ago Joining Dalton Foundries are Charles D. Fennell as engineering technician, Michael P. Murphy as supervisor in the core department; Joseph N. Spyhalski as costs and budget manager. Bob and Joyce Kline are the developers of Brookshire Village located on Ind. 15. There are currently 28 lots under development with plans for 72 in all. The lot sizes range from .5 acre to 3 acres. Kathy Foreman was honored at the Atwood fire station in celebration of her 11th birthday. Lugardia Teel celebrated her 95th birthday at Prairie View Nursing Home with her sons Lloyd, Fort Wayne, and Norman, Rochester. 75 Years Ago The automobile of Mrs. Maynard Spacht, 1017 E. Market St., was sideswiped by a Big Four train on Hickory Street Sunday evening. No person was injured but damage to the automobile was estimated at $74.50. Passengers in the Spacht auto were her daughters Alice May, 11, and Barbara, 7, and a neighbor’s child, Sue Wiggs, 8. An antique sewing machine dated 1861 oowned by Mrs. Rollin Scott, Claypool. The machine has a double glass pedal the shape of a human foot and though very old, it still does good work. Nancy Walters, mother of former Warsaw star basketball player Jack Walters and Gladys Workman, will be 91 years old March 2.
