    State Forester Burnell C. Fischer presented a plaque to Syracuse Town Manager Brian Redshaw, honoring the town for its recent designation as a “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation. Others attending the ceremony were Syracuse Parks and Recreation Superintendent Mike Hixenbaugh, Syracuse town council president Barb Carwile and council member Bill Hane.

    Warsaw businessman Sam Joyner, a star running back and linebacker for the Tigers’ undefeated 1952 football program, will be one of nine new members inducted later this summer into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. Joyner, a Warsaw businessman and 1953 Warsaw High School graduate, appeared in the first North-South All-Star football game, played at the Butler Bowl in 1953, after a distinguished career on both offense (fullback) and defense (Linebacker) for Warsaw. Joyner was the first Warsaw High school graduate to start for a Big Ten team in football (playing for the Purdue Boilermakers).

   Kathleen Rood has done it again! This morning she won the Kosciusko County spelling championship for the third consecutive year, winning the prized Times-Union engraved mounted wall plaque and the right to compete later in the Indiana district spelldown at Fort Wayne.

    Twenty-nine employes of the Gresso stores of Warsaw and North Manchester were entertained at a dinner recently at the Warsaw cafeteria. The meeting marked the conclusion of a contest and the losers were served beans, while the winners enjoyed a chicken dinner. The business meeting was presided over by the president, Harry Wakiins, of the local store.
