10 Years Ago Serving the community of Oswego, Calvary Baptist Church will be 50 years old April 4. In 1954 the founders met in the home of George and Florence VanCuren in Oswego. Later that year a basement church was begun on the site of the old school. The church has ministered from that location ever since. Jubilee celebrations are planned throughout April. Former pastor Dr. Lee Kantenwein will speak this Sunday morning. Charter member C. Robert Teeple will share church memories. The congregation will gather around the original piano from the VanCuren home and sing songs used in the days of the founding. 25 Years Ago Triton’s eighth-grade girls basketball team ended its season with a perfect record. KC the animated squirrel is ready to make its debut. “The Secret’s Out In Indiana – Kosciusko County” promotion is a cooperative effort by the Warsaw and Syracuse chambers of commerce and the Kosciusko County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. 50 Years Ago Berta Silva is an exchange student from Salto, Uruguay, and finds attending Warsaw High School and life in our town quite different from her native land. The cold and wintry weather is a new experience for her. “In South America all desserts contain custard or whipped cream fillings,” she said. Silva is sponsored by the Rotary Club under the Youth For Understanding program and stayed with the Donald Hogan family until mid-March when she was a guest of the Raymond DeFabios in Gable Addition. She will live at the Charles Bertsch home from April until time to return home in July. Gesine Schwerdtfeger of Gottingen, Germany, was one of Warsaw’s first exchange students sponsored by the Church of the Brethren and graduating in 1953 from Warsaw High School. She lived at the home of Iva Lozier, 413 W. Perry St. 75 Years Ago Warsaw’s large pumper rolled from the fire station three times Wednesday. At nine 9:45 a.m. Wednesday firemen were called to extinguish a roof fire at the Joe McCoy property, 226 Fort Wayne Ave.; a small roof fire was extinguished at 5 p.m. at the Cloice Brown home, 1212 E. Fort Wayne St.; a truck driver discovered a blaze on the roof of the Hiram Hillery farm residence near the southern city limits at 10 p.m. that night. Firemen arrived in time to confine the flames to a small square. Damage estimated at $25 was done. Warsaw Merchants basketball team dropped a close contest to the Globe Trotters at the Armory Wednesday night 40-37. Eugene Estep, former Milford Trojan flash, led the locals with 12 points.
