10 Years Ago Kory Lantz is the first Wawasee boy to garner “Player of the Year” honors. He threw 2,000 yards as quarterback for his football team. In basketball, he has helped lead the Warriors to their best ever regular season record,16-4. His father Mark played football, tennis, basketball and baseball at Wawasee; brother Kyle is a former Warrior basketball and baseball standout. Kory’s grandfather, Bud Lantz, was once Wawasee’s athletic director. Merdena Lister, secretary and office manager of the Kosciusko Extension office for 40 years, and Dennis Darr, in Extension since 1965, were honored at the Purdue Extension meeting at Center Lake Pavilion. Darr was given the “Friend of Extension Award.” 25 Years Ago Brandie J. Heckaman, a sixth-grade student at Atwood School, has been selected as one of 12 winners in NIPSCO’s first energy safety poster contest. James Manhart, district manager of the Warsaw office, presented Brandie with a $50 U.S. Savings Bond. Janet Dome, a South Whitley Middle School eighth-grader, took the seventh- and eighth-grade championship title in the 77th round. Her sister, Debra, a sixth-grader at South Whitley, took the fifth- and sixth-grade title. The sisters will face each other March 8 for the 1989 Kosciusko County Area Spelling Bee Championship at the First United Methodist Church. In the top five are Janet and Carrie Schmahl, Syracuse; Sam Shetty, Warsaw; Jennifer Seemeyer, Milford; Amanda Ousley, North Webster. 50 Years Ago Free Methodist Publishing House employees honored at a dinner were Lloyd H. Knox, publisher, who was presented a 10-year pin by Bishop J. Paul Taylor representing the church, Donald M. Joy, Leona Trushel, John C. Benson, Ruth Horton, Norman Taylor, Naomi Walter, Richard Taylor, Alice H. Shaffer and Elwood Farr. There were 150 staff members and guests present. Max Fluke supervised the installation of furnishings in the new dormitory at Grace College. Three floors will be ready for occupancy Feb. 8. Men will be housed on the ground floor and women on the first and second floors. The students have been living at the Westminster Hotel. The third floor will be ready by the end of August. The dormitory will eventually house 240 students. 75 Years Ago After trailing for the greater portion of the contest, Burket High Schools’s cage quintet staged a last period rally to defeat the Etna Green Cubs Saturday night 24 to 20. Etna Green took the lead in the initial quarter 5 to 2 and at the half was in front 10 to 7. At the end of the third period, the Cubs continued to lead by three points, 16 to 13. Sponseller, Etna Green forward, was high point man with nine. Doran led Burket with seven points. Etna Green took the reserve team game 19 to 7. A farewell party was given for Mr. and Mrs. Earl Rapp and family who will move the first of February to Burket where they have purchased a grocery store and restaurant. Many of their family and friends were present.
