10 Years Ago Jaclyn Leininger, daughter of Dan and Cindy Leininger, Warsaw, was honored by athletic director Dave Fulkerson with her number 32 being retired before the start of the Warsaw/Huntington North game, the first home game of the season. Leininger led the Lady Tigers to a state finals appearance en route to Miss Basketball honors, and is all-time leading scorer in a single season. She is now a freshman at Miami (Ohio) University. A wood-burning stove is believed to be the cause of a fire at the Steer Inn in Silver Lake Monday morning. The Silver Lake Fire Department was called around 9:55 a.m. after smoke and flames were seen coming from the roof. Seven departments assisted. 25 Years Ago Officials at Indiana Vocational Technical College have announced that Joe Beeson is resigning from his nine-year post as director of the college’s Warsaw center. Since he became director, enrollment has doubled. He built the Warsaw Racquet Club, and has since owned and managed the facility. Hal Apple, who resides on the farm, said that he lost 2,000 bales of straw, 15 to 20 tons of hay, a wagon, grain drill and other light machinery. According to historians of the area, the barn was built prior to the Civil War and was used by the Underground Railroad. Mary Kathryn Shoup, sponsor, pinned their “flaming torch” pins on them. 75 Years Ago Made of a secret plastic compound of powdered egg shells and cement bound together with a mucilage-like substance which he has invented, J.M. Heckman, Etna Green, displayed his oddly-made musical instrument in The Times office. The instrument has a white cement color, is heavier than the usual wooden violin and has a tone which seems more mellow than the usual fiddle. He has been a blacksmith for 30 years at Nappanee and Etna Green. He owns 30 fiddles. James Stillson, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rial Stillson, has been presented with a gift by the First Mennonite Sunday School in Nappanee for a perfect attendance record for a period of five years.
