10 Years Ago Three local men officiated state finals events recently for the Indiana High School Athletic Association. Jeff Noffsinger, Warsaw, officiated last week’s girls soccer state semifinal match between unbeatens Carmel and Fort Wayne Snider. Noffsinger is the test supervisor for the Northern Indiana Officials Association (NIOA). Dan Richard, also of Warsaw, officiated the Class 1A volleyball semifinals and then was head referee for 2A state chamionship at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Akron’s Kirk Robinson made his fourth state championship appearance, officiating the volleyball 3A semifinals and then working as the head referee for 4A State championship match at Hinkle Fieldhouse. 25 Years Ago The national reference press of Owings Mills, Md., recently contacted Randy Polston, principal of Claypool Elementary School, to inform him that he’s been nominated for inclusion in “Who’s Who in American Education.” The reference source is scheduled for publication next summer, and is committed to recognizing excellence in education. 50 Years Ago Kosciusko County basketball rolled into its second full week Friday night as a seven-game slate with several interesting developments highlighted the hardwood activity. Sidney fans are a happy lot today after their Wildcats finally defeated North Webster following a seven-year dry spell, and Mentone continued to display unyielding dominance with a 30-point shattering of Tippecanoe in the WRSW “Game of the Week.” 75 Years Ago The typical small city American family--husband, wife and two children--gets about in a 1935 model automobile, is making monthly payments on a home and sees a movie once a week--on an income of $1,400 a year. Government surveys of the earning, living and spending habits of 100,000 average American families resulted in the picture of the typical small city family.
