10 Years Ago Winners of the “Police Imitating Golfers” outing were Brett Harter, J.D. Ayres, John Ayres and Brent Baker. The foursome fired a 12-under par 70 at South Shore Golf Course. Baker aced the fifth hole. He used a 9-iron from 135 yards to score a hole-in-one for the second time, the first coming when he was 12 years old. Kyla Hall, a fourth-grader at Harrison Elementary School, threw the tomahawk during “Back to the Days of Kosciuszko.” Ryan Yocum and Charlie Wright supervised the event. The fourth annual “Kid’s Market” will be held at Rodeheaver Auditorium. Children’s clothing, toys and other items are available with proceeds going to charities to support local children. 25 Years Ago Everett “Butch” Warren, assistant chief, was given the Kosciusko County Fireman of the Year award at the 43rd annual fish fry. Warren is the president of the County Fireman’s Association and has served on the Mentone Fire Department for 19 years. Other awards went to Bill Metcalf for more than 50 years of service with the North Webster Department and to Claude Swick for his 27 years with the Burket Fire Department. Tippecanoe Valley set a school record for most wins in a season as the Lady Vikings defeated Wawasee 200-241 at the Rochester Golf Course. Senior Lorrie Erp led the Vikings with a round of 47 which included five bogies and two pars, and this earned her individual medalist honors. Freshman Heidi Fugate added a 49 for the Vikings. Teresa West led the Warriors with a 57. The Lady Vikings are 10-2 for the season. 50 Years Ago Dr. Roland S. Snider will open offices in the Murphy Professional Building, 422 S. Buffalo Street, in the rooms formerly occupied by Dr. George Schlemmer, for the general practice of medicine starting Sept. 14. He took his intern work at the Detroit, Mich., Receiving Hospital. Larry Nellans announced the opening of a new real estate office on Ind. 15, two blocks south of the Warsaw city limits. He graduated from I.U. School of Business. Akron Fair is Sept. 10, 11 and 12. Akron and Beaver Dam Schools were closed so youths could participate in “Kid’s Day.” Dale Smith is president of the fair and Ralph Rader is vice president. 75 Years Ago Cameron Robinson, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Robinson, Warsaw, Class A champ, and Bobby Anderson, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Anderson, Warsaw, Class B winner, lined up for the final heat of the Soap Box Derby. At the finish line 1,000 feet down, a new $50 bicycle awaited the winner. Robinson, with his red and black streamlined car, was declared the winner in a near-photo finish and became the Kosciusko County champ for 1939. Only 4 feet separated the two cars as they sped across the finish line at 17.8 miles per hour. Both boys will represent this county, along with Jimmy Nice, whose car was wrecked, at the Fort Wayne Soap Box Derby July 18.
