Warsaw Astronomical Society will have telescopes set up on the south end of Wal-Mart parking lot Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28 and 29, providing a live view of Mars, which will not be this close to Earth for another 13 years. Mars will appear the size of a pea, but viewers may be able to see the polar caps and dark markings on the planet if the atmosphere is steady. Messmore to captain and Jon Evans to lieutenant. Messmore is an 11-year veteran, completing first and second-class certification in 1981. Roger Hyde turned in September's high game at Holiday Bowl with a 299; Glen Ransbottom Jr. had the men's high series for the month with a 775. Barb Brown had both the high game (221) and high series (575) for women. At Gilliam Lanes, Marsha Miller had the high game for September, 255, and a 640 series. Nick Koedyker, of Route 2, Silver Lake, grew a 95-pound pumpkin, measuring 70 inches in circumference. Three others in the field weighed 64, 68 and 72 pounds.

Claypool's O.W. Ford's recently received a letter from Robert Timns, England, a youth who had resided with them three years before the World War. When England called for volunteers, Robert enlisted with the Canadians, and the Fords had not heard from him in 18 years. The postmaster at Leeds, England, assisted the Fords in locating him. He and his family are thankful their lives were spared.
