Rob Reed of Winona Lake received a geography lesson last weekend at the World Chili Cookoff in Las Vegas, Nev.

Reed, Indiana's top chili chef, traveled west with the intention of wowing the judges with a batch of HOT LZ CHILI. The problem was, in the desert the boiling point is 190 degrees F. Reed is used to a 225-degree F. boiling point so before he knew it his tomato sauce evaporated. He thought a little Bloody Mary mix might help, but the judges' sensitive palates then labeled it too sweet! Reed is ready to fine tune the recipe now. The chilihead will be prepared for a low boiling point next year.
