10 Years AgoJanice Carlin, the first woman to be on the Kosciusko Emergency Radio in 35 years of service, is an example of persistence paying off.KEMRAD is a local organization that helps local law enforcement and frees the officers for more major jobs. KEMRAD is a nonprofit volunteer organization. The organization started in the 1960s and was an all-male group until Carlin applied. Carlin, 42, of Warsaw, hopes she has opened the door for other women to volunteer.25 Years AgoNicole Varney, 15, was named the 1985 Pioneer Days Queen during ceremonies Friday night on the courthouse lawn. The daughter of Phyllis and William Varney, Warsaw, her sister, Mickie, was queen in 1983 and last year her cousin, Misti Higginbotham, was the winner. First runner-up was Candi Rogers and second runner-up was Thelma Bertram. Delta Theta Tau sponsors the Pioneer Days Queen Contest. Miss Varney won $200 in cash, a commemorative gift and a crown.50 Years AgoFourteen-year-old Steve Rapp, Warsaw, had just two pounds "to spare" when he weighed in with his car at the Soap Box Derby inspection at Munson's storage garage. The limit for car and driver is 250 pounds. Steve, first in line for the inspection, was able to breathe a sigh of relief when he saw the arrow stop at 248. Oh yes, as a parting remark Steven said he was glad he didn't eat his usual heavy breakfast this morning.75 Years AgoThe Primary and Junior Departments of the U.B. Church of Atwood held their annual picnic recently at the city park in Warsaw. The youngsters were chaperoned by the Rev. and Mrs. Nicodemus, and their primary superintendent, Mrs. L. Rovenstine, and one of their teachers, Mrs. Catherine Irwin. There were about 75 present, and about 50 of that number were children. After the dinner, the afternoon was spent swimming.
