10 Years AgoThe second annual Polar Bear Plunge occurred at noon yesterday and was observed by a leap into a hole cut into the frozen surface of the Winona Lake channel. This year's winter bathers included: Dave Taylor, Megan King, Heidi Yoder, Steve Meyers, Kris Stewart and Andy Ulrich. Spectators cheered on their friends and relatives from the bank.25 Years AgoScott Avery and the Warsaw Community High School choral group entertained 91 Optimists with Christmas musical selections. Favorite selections included "Let It Snow," "O, Holy Night," "Winter Wonderland" and "On Christmas Night".First place in the essay contest this year went to Kristen Berry with a topic on "Freedom, Our Most Precious Heritage," with the competition sponsored by the Valley Forge Freedoms Foundation. Her essay focused on freedom of religion as she imagined herself in a Communist country. Second place was awarded to Todd Willert, and third place to Molly McAffrey.50 Years AgoLance Henry Berner was the first and only baby born on New Year's Day at the Murphy Medical Center in Warsaw. The proud parents are Mr. and Mrs. Jim Berner, Winona Lake. The baby made his debut at 5 p.m. Sunday, and both mother and child are doing fine. Jim is an announcer-engineer for radio stations WRSW and WRSW FM. Mrs. Berner is the former Paula Ann Smith of Prairie Dusac, Wis.75 Years Ago The quietest New Year's in many years was the arrival of 1936. At midnight there was no blowing of vehicles, sounding of sirens and ringing of bells. One pistol shot and the short tolling of one church bell was all of the sound except the striking of the hour of midnight by the courthouse clock. The streets of Warsaw appeared similar to the "deserted village" as public offices and all stores except drug stores and restaurants were closed. There was not an arrest made here New Year's Eve. One empty whisky bottle was observed in the snow on Indiana Street, just north of Center Street.
