The Kosciusko County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 149 currently is taking applications for the Jason Beal/Hochstetler Scholarship. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded at the FOP Annual Golf Scholarship Outing at Rozella Ford Golf Course June 2.
The Scholarship program was started three years ago in remembrance of two local officers killed in the line of duty. Detective/Sergeant Phil Hochstetler was shot and killed in 1994 during a criminal investigation. Indiana State Police Trooper Jason Beal was assisting a motorist on Ind. 14 in Kosciusko County when he was struck and killed by another motorist in 2000.
The FOP provides for two different scholarships; one awarded to an individual pursuing a law enforcement major and the second is awarded to public service-oriented students (includes nursing, corrections and public safety). Those students interested in applying for either scholarship can apply by phone at 574-551-3559 or by mailing a request form to: Kosciusko County FOP Lodge 149 Attn: Jason Beal Scholarship Program, P.O. Box 832, Warsaw, IN 46580.
The deadline for applications is today and the selected winners will be contacted before the golf outing.
The FOP has spots available for the four-man team outing. Entry cost for the outing is $200 per team. The event starts at noon with a lunch and a shotgun start at 1 p.m.
