Joe Charles Putrich, 79, of WeeMaTuk, passed away into eternal life in heaven at 3:15 a.m. Saturday, June 24, 2017, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria. He was born Nov. 27, 1937, in Canton, the son of Fabian “Dobby” and Lois Lightle Putrich. He married the love of his life, Elaine Howard, on July 5, 1959, at the First Christian Church in Canton. She survives.
Genevieve Ileene Stafford, 88 years old at the time of her death, passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at 11 a.m. in her Warsaw home. Genevieve was born to Jacob and Hazel Hicks Rockey on Nov. 19, 1929. She was born in Warsaw, spending most of her lifetime there. On April 13, 1954, she was married to the late Roland W. Stafford Sr.

SYRACUSE – Richard J.L. “Dick” Fulk, 77, of Syracuse, passed away at 2:07 p.m. on June 22, 2017, at his home. He was born March 28, 1940, in Churubusco (Green Center), to Jesse L. and Clara Boggs Fulk. He attended Churubusco High School and was a United States Army veteran. He was a self-employed merchant and the former owner/operator of Dick’s Chevy Shack in Wolf Lake for over 50 years. He lived in the Syracuse area for many years, formerly lived in Churubusco and Camden, Mich., and wintered in Ocala, Fla. for several years.
John Richard Pfeiffer, 83, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, in the Nappanee home which he’d built by hand. John was born Jan. 6, 1934, in Nappanee, to William C. and Nellie Faulkner Pfeiffer. Lucky enough to find love twice in his life, John was married to Betty Munson on May 10, 1958. They were married for almost 10 years until her passing on Jan. 5, 1968. John married Linda Hawkins on May 21, 1971, in Elkhart. They would share 31 years together until her passing on Nov. 4, 2002.
BOURBON — Mary “Annette” Patterson, Pullman Wash., passed away Saturday morning, June 17, 2017, at Regency Senior Living. She was 92. Annette was born May 3, 1925, in Warsaw, to Paul and Dorothy Rizer Patterson. She grew up in Bourbon and graduated from high school there in 1943. Annette was a very gifted and talented musician and she played clarinet and piano and sang in the church choir. She was also a member of the Bourbon High School marching band. She went on to attend Indiana University on a city service scholarship and performed in the Indiana University marching band there as well. She married her high school sweetheart, Max E. Patterson, on July 11, 1943, and they held each other’s hands until her passing. During the war years, Annette and Max lived apart sometimes, but together in Jacksonville, Fla., and San Diego, Calif. Later, on the GI bill, while Max was at Purdue University, they made their home in Lafayette, where Annette worked as a secretary in the Department of Horticulture. In 1949 they moved to Geneva, N.Y., and she worked at the Ag Experiment Station for Cornell University, while Max earned a Master of Science degree. Max and Annette returned to Lafayette and Purdue for five years while Max pursued his Ph.D. before moving to Pullman in 1958. They’ve lived in Pullman for the last 60 years. Annette worked as a statistician for the USDA Wheat Breeding Laboratory in Pullman for nearly 20 years, retiring in 1984. She continued her passion for music learning and performing the recorder and cello, sang in the choir and was an avid reader of books. She enjoyed sewing and knitting, and Annette and Max traveled extensively together and with friends. She was an active member of the Pullman Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women’s Circle, DAR, PEO and the Ingleside Book Club. Annette is survived by her husband of 73 years, Max Patterson, Pullman; two children, Celeste Shaw (and husband John), Moscow, Idaho, and Paul Patterson (and wife Nüket), State College, Pa.; two grandchildren, Kevin Patterson, Santa Monica, Calif., and Cameron Patterson, State College; and by her sister, C. Pauline Becknell, Bourbon. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. Her family meant so much to her that she and Max traveled frequently to see family and friends, and to State College to watch her grandchildren, Kevin and Cameron, grow up. She is greatly loved and will be sorely missed by her family and friends. A gathering of friends and family and a time of remembrance was held Wednesday, June 21, at Kimball Funeral Home, Pullman. Concluding services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at Bourbon First United Methodist Church, 204 N. BOURBON — Barbara Lee Westafer, 87, formerly of Bourbon, passed away Saturday, June 17, 2017, in Signature Health Care, Bremen. She had been in failing health for several years. Barbara was born May 29, 1930, the daughter of Ira Lee and Elsie Mullins, in St. Joseph County. On April 1, 1947, in Rochester, she married Eugene “Dusty” Westafer, who passed away Nov.12, 2002. Surviving family include a daughter, Susan (and Terry) Bon Durant, Bremen; son, David (and Jeannie Westafer), Dickson, Tenn.; and daughter-in-law, Jolene Westafer, Xenia, Ohio. Barbara was also blessed with nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and sisters: Joan Leffert, Sharon (and John) Robinson and Betty Weirick. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Dennis in 2014 and Duane “Doug” on Jan. 9, 2017; sister, Marybelle Conners; brother, John Mullins; and brothers-in-law: Gerald Leffert, Fred Conners and Gene Weirick. Barbara worked in a factory for a short time, but most of all, was a homemaker, gardener and helped manage the family farm and the family business, The Bourbon Foundry. Barbara grew up with family values like homemade meals with all the trimmings and raising a lot of their food from her parents’ garden. Her experiences of farm life were found memories of hers. One thing Barbara was known for was her “yodeling.” She was a member of a bowling league. She enjoyed going out to eat, going on golf trips with her husband and friends, spending time with family and playing cards. Barbara and Dusty were generous with donations to Triton High School and were known for surprising their grandchildren with generous gifts. The couple enjoyed sharing what they had with others and preferred to live simply. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 24, at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Bourbon, where she will be placed with her husband of 55 years. GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. — Mary Alice Steele, 83 of Grand Rapids, formerly of Mansfield, Ohio, and Warsaw, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2017, at her daughter’s home, where she had resided since moving to Grand Rapids in 2009. Mary Alice was born March 19, 1934, in Jewel Ridge, Va., to Ellis R. and Edna T. Jackson Rasnake. She was united in marriage to Kyle William Steele on May 5, 1956, in Bucyrus, Ohio.
Rex Allen Long, 54 years old at the time of his passing, lost his life in a motorcycle accident in North Carolina on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. His life partner, Cheryl Bays, was also killed in the accident.
NORTH WEBSTER — Luis Antonio “Tonio” Villa Romero, 35, Warsaw, passed away at 2:15 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2017, as the result of an automobile accident in Milford. He was born Jan. 24, 1982, in Guanacevi Durango, Mexico, to Margarito Villa Anaya and Concepcion Romero Quinones. He attended public schools in Mexico, where lived until moving to Aurora, Ill., at the age of 16. He later moved to the Warsaw area. He was married on Jan. 19, 2014, in Oswego, to Jamie Lynn Neibert Lopez, who survives.
SYRACUSE — Michael James "Mike" Mignery, 84, Cromwell, passed away at 9:03 a.m. Sunday, June 11, 2017, at Goshen Hospital. He was born Oct. 15, 1932, in St. Joseph, Mo., to William J. and Nastina “Nell” Pukszyn Mignery. He graduated in 1950 from Jefferson High School in Elkhart County. He was married on Dec. 24, 1951, in Goshen, to Meredith Lee Hess, who survives.
FORT WAYNE — Ben “Benifred” Franklin Chapin, 76 years young, bid farewell to this world on Friday, June 9, 2017. Ben was born in 1940 to Hugh and Geraldine Chapin. He received his Master of Science degree from Butler University in 1970 and went on to teach biology for many years for the Indianapolis school system. Ben was also a Century 21 Gold Key Realtor and also enjoyed his many years meeting people and selling many people their first home.

David E. Schumacher, 71, Clayton, N.C., passed away at his home June 11, 2017. He was born to Herman and Doris Schumacher on Dec. 25, 1945, in Onarga, Ill. David is survived by his loving and very devoted wife, Peggy Ann. David served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1970 in Germany and Vietnam. He spent most of his early years in Kosciusko County, working as an auto body repairman. Later, he spent many years as an over-the-road truck driver, driving coast to coast, which he enjoyed very much. Surviving along with his wife are two sons and a daughter: Steven Schumacher, Michael Schumacher and Anna Gwinnue, all of the Indianapolis area; two brothers and a sister: Robert Schumacher, North Carolina; Charles Schumacher, Warsaw; and Kathleen McClure, North Manchester; a stepson, Randy Carter, Clayton, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Robin Wise, Granger; and many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy, in 2013; his parents; and two brothers and a sister, Ray Schumacher, Paul Schumacher and Janet Boyack. Thomas Rhea "Tom" White, 79, Syracuse, passed away at 8:59 p.m. Friday, June 16, 2017, at his home. He was born Oct. 19, 1937, in Auburn, Ky., to Mendel Douglas and Mattie Penrod White. He graduated in 1956 from Kaiser High School, Dayton, Ohio, and was a United States Air Force veteran. He was raised in Dayton, moved to Goshen, and then to Syracuse in 1978. He was married on Sept. 19, 1987, in Syracuse, to Karen Sue Plank Noel Larimer.
