A Warsaw youth was treated at a local hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the foot Monday morning.

Ryan Swearingen, 8, of West CR 100N, was shooting at cans with an uncle when the incident occurred about 11:51 a.m.

The uncle, Dyrs Owens, 21, of Warsaw, told police that Swearingen was trying to decock his gun and had the .22-caliber Brazetech pointed down.

Owens said he was just telling Swearingen not to point the gun down while decocking when the weapon discharged.

Swearingen was struck in the foot and, after undergoing surgery at Kosciusko Community Hospital, he was released.

The incident was investigated by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.
