Steve Jungbauer, chief executive officer of the Warsaw YMCA, presented future goals for the organization to Winona Lake's town council Tuesday.
Jungbauer informed council members of the organization's goals of constructing a new facility in the near future.
"The current YMCA establishment causes problems for expansion because it is landlocked and we are close to being too small for our 7,600 members," Jungbauer said.
The YMCA's newly acquired location, at 3919 Ind. 15N, could house the new facility, Jungbauer said.
Wherever the YMCA does decide to construct its new building, the old location will stay open to the public, Jungbauer said.
An ordinance to finalize new garage sale restrictions was tabled by the council pending public feedback.
The new ordinance, already approved once by the council and awaiting a second and final reading, will hold all individuals having garage sales responsible for purchasing a $5 permit for each event.
Under the ordinance, garage sales are allowed on any Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and three events are allowed per year from one location. Any event open for consecutive days within the ordinance restrictions is considered one event.
Anyone violating these new guidelines will be given a $250 citation from the Winona Lake Police Department. This citation does not include attorney fees, and violation can not exceed a total of $2,500.
An ordinance to increase the speed limit on Pierceton Road, from CR 250E to town limits, from 35 miles per hour to 40 mph, unanimously was approved by the council. Members supported the ordinance, stating that no residential zoning was adjacent to the road and that most of Pierceton Road is already 40 mph. The area of the road changed lies adjacent to Stonehenge Golf Course.
"I've talked to many people from the community supporting the idea, and I know there are times that I'm on the road and need to go faster, whether I'm just needing to get home or trying to avoid a golf ball sailing towards my car," councilman Jerry Clevenger said. "I feel this is a very logical decision."
The council also approved a resolution to hire Kathy Schumacher as the Winona Lake Senior Center director. Schumacher's new position will be part time.
Reports on local events in Winona Lake included a conference of the Fellowship of Grace Brethern Churches scheduled Sunday through Aug. 5; the Aug. 6 Billy Sunday Day in the Village at Winona; an an antique car festival Aug. 20.
Present members were Clevenger, Dave Delp and Jeff Carroll. Rolly Ortega and Joy Lohse were absent.
