World War II, Iwo Jima Veterans Invited To Tribute
Posted
Staff Report-
For some, Feb. 23 is just another day in February.
For World War II veterans, it is a reminder of something more important. The day marks the 66th year anniversary of the seizure of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima, Japan. Some Americans remember the historical American flag-raising by five Marines and one Navy Corpsman. The battle for Iwo Jima cost the United States 4,590 lives and wounded 24,096 Marines and sailors.
On Feb. 23, from 1 to 3 p.m., at the Indiana War Memorial in Indianapolis, Detachment 1, Communication Co., United States Marine Corps from Peru, Ind., will pay tribute to all that served and sacrificed in the battle for Iwo Jima.
Detachment 1 is inviting all Iwo Jima and WWII veterans, families and friends to the first annual Iwo Jima Memorial Service in Indianapolis.
The service includes Marine Corps Color Guard and Rifle Detail, music and band provided by Tipton High School, social to meet and greet with fellow Iwo Jima veterans, Mt. Suribachi flag-raising re-enactment, 21-gun rifle salute, guest of honor speech and "Taps".
