World Compassion Network Sponsors 5K Run/Walk For Hunger In Winona Lake

Posted
WINONA LAKE - Runners and walkers will have the opportunity this month to raise funds for those who are hungry in Kosciusko County.

World Compassion Network will sponsor a 5K run and walk March 28 at 10 a.m. at Winona Lake Park.

WCN was founded by Joe and Lynn Wilkey in January 2002 to mobilize and assist the church in responding to the needs of disaster victims and the poor.

"We want to bring awareness to provide food for those who are unemployed in our community and support efforts of local food pantries," Wilkey said.

Clark Shepherd, race chair, said the run and walk brings awareness to those in poverty in the community.

Shepherd came up with the idea for the race and walk to help raise funds for those in the community who cannot afford food.

The registration fee participants pay will allow WCN to purchase food for local agencies such as Our Father's House, Salvation Army, and Combined Community Services.

Shepherd said there are currently 160 people registered and said in addition to local participants there will be people from Ohio, Marion, and Indianapolis who will participate in the race.

The course will go through Winona Lake on the paved Lake City Greenway Heritage Trail.

Race day registration will be March 28 at the Winona Lake Senior Center from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m.

Pre-registration is $15 and after Thursday the registration fee is $20.

T-shirts are guaranteed for those who pre register and will be available to those who register after Thursday while supplies last.

Awards will be presented to the overall male and female winners as well as awards to the top three finishers in each age group.
