Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety Friday approved for Warsaw Municipal Airport to update its automated weather observation system.
David Beall, airport manager, said its vendor, Vaisala, requires that the airport update its existing equipment. The $48,040 upgrade will include updates to the airport system's sensors and equipment.
The system allows people to call on the telephone or use a weather radio in an airplane to receive weather information, Beall said.
The board also approved for the Warsaw Fire Department to apply for a grant to purchase instructor materials.
The $17,130 grant is provided through the Department of Homeland Security and funds public safety projects.
If awarded, the grant will allow WFD to purchase instructor firefighter, driver, operator, vehicle rescue and technical rescue materials. Along with the instructor materials, the department will request a laptop computer and projector to present the materials.
Also during the meeting, Warsaw Human Resources Director Jennifer Whitaker said Warsaw Parks Department has hired a new activities director.
Staci Young will serve as the park activities director effective June 1. Young replaces Janelle Wilson who resigned effective Friday.
In other business, Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins said he is concerned with non-operable vehicles on city residents' private properties that don't have license plates.
He said the city will be getting more involved in working with the city's building commissioner to make sure letters are sent to residents who do not have license plates on non-operating vehicles on their property.
