SYRACUSE – The transformation of Vega field into a youth sports complex is on track, Syracuse council heard Tuesday.
Thanks to donations both large and small – the town recently received a check for $80,000, the K21 Foundation's half of a matching grant, as well as $500 from Boy Scout Troop 728 – the field may be ready for football by the end of the season.
Hostetler Lawn and Landscaping of Middlebury is seeding the field, and Pacemaker Buildings of North Webster will install a concession stand and utility shed, pending approval from the state fire marshal.
Council also approved Tuesday an ordinance vacating portions of North, Portland and Ash streets that were platted to extend into the field on the west side of town, but that were never developed.
A walkathon will be held May 12 to raise further funds toward the project, which has an expected total cost of about $400,000 for two fields with parking, bleachers, and other amenities. Details will be announced later.
Also during the meeting, council approved about $53,000 in purchases for the Public Works Department, including $3,000 for a water pump for line repairs and $7,495 for a lawnmower. Up to $43,000 was approved for a new utility truck if the department can find one available immediately from an area dealer.
