Woman Dies From Sunday Crash Injuries

Posted

The Claypool woman injured in a Sunday train-pickup accident died this morning as a result of her injuries.

Lessli Carol Bays, 28, was pronounced dead at 3 a.m. today after being removed from life support at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Bays suffered internal injuries in a 12:32 p.m. accident Sunday at the CSX crossing near the intersection of U.S. 30 and CR 450E, west of Pierceton. She was a passenger in the pickup driven by her husband, Lester L. "Buck" Bays, 26. The train struck the vehicle on its passenger side, causing the pickup to, at first, stick to the front of the train before falling back onto the track and flipping over.

Lester Bays also suffered internal injuries in the accident. He was released from Parkview on Tuesday.

The Bays' 16-month-old son, Brody Bays, was treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital the day of the accident and released, according to police, who said the toddler was protected by his child restraint seat.

The accident remains under investigation by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.

Bays' obituary appears on Page 3A of today's edition.
