WL Resident Joins Red Cross In Responding To Flint Water Crisis

Posted
INDIANAPOLIS – On Thursday, six more volunteers were added to the team responding to the water emergency in Flint, Mich., bringing the total number of Indiana Red Cross disaster workers to 10.
According to a press release from the Red Cross, among the volunteers was Bob Harkness, Winona Lake. He is driving an emergency RV with Sam Glick, Elkhart, to  help with water distribution.
The American Red Cross is supporting coordinated state and local water distribution efforts. Red Cross volunteers are distributing bottled water, water filters, replacement cartridges, home water testing kits and educational materials at water resource sites (fire stations, health department, city hall, Michigan Health & Human Services office, county community action resource department offices) and now door to door with the help of the recently activated Michigan National Guard. The governor of Michigan declared a state of emergency in Flint Jan. 5 at the request of city and county officials, according to the release.
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation's blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families, the release also states.
The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, visit redcross.org or on Twitter at @RedCross
