With winter approaching, Winona Lake and Warsaw street departments are making sure they are prepared to deal with unfavorable weather conditions.
The Winona Lake Street Department has been prepared for the past three weeks with the tools it needs to make sure roads are safe for its citizens, according to Public Works Director Pete O'Connell.
"We have been ready for the past three weeks with plenty of salt on hand and gotten our trucks and plows ready," O'Connell said.
The department has two trucks with salt and plows, and has two additional trucks ready for plows to be installed.
O'Connell said salt was put on intersections and curves this morning in Winona Lake.
"We have two bad hills on 9th and 12th street and we want to make sure we keep those salted," O'Connell said.
He said the street department focuses on salting intersections, hills, roadways and sidewalks to make sure the areas are safe for drivers and pedestrians.
The Warsaw Street Department also is preparing for winter weather.
The department's four salt trucks were out at 4:30 a.m. this morning laying a mixture of salt and beet juice, a de-ice anti-freezing agent, on streets in Warsaw.
The department has eight large snow plow trucks, 10 one-ton snow plow trucks and three pickup trucks to plow smaller areas.
