Winona Lake Vacates Chestnut Street Park

Posted

WINONA LAKE - Chestnut Street Park has been vacated with no plans to replace it, said Winona Lake Parks Director Jim LeMasters at the park board meeting Monday.

Chestnut Street Park used to have a swing set but that has been taken down. LeMasters said the property will continue to be maintained and mowed but the Parks Department will be putting its resources into Southtown Park. LeMasters said there has only been one complaint about the missing swing set. He doesn't want to give the impression that there's going to be something new at that location.

In other business:

• The Parks Department is looking into options to destroy Cottage Three on Park Avenue in the Winona Lake Park.

At the Oct. 2 Park Board meeting the board discussed the fate of Cottage Three. The cottage is deteriorating and is not in livable condition. LeMasters had two local builders, Dick Taylor and Mike Deck, examine the cottage. Both said the estimated cost to repair the cottage would be between $8,000 and $12,000.

Two options the Park Department has looked into are allowing the Winona Lake Fire Department to burn it for a practice fire or allowing Dave Carey Excavating to demolish it.

• The board also discussed the basketball courts to be built next to the tennis courts in Winona Lake Park. The board is trying to get Dave Carey Excavating to build the courts.

Members of the park board include: president Scott Nichols, Karen Wildman, Veisa Staton, Willa Henry and Ivan Schuler.
