WINONA LAKE - It seemed to be a daunting task last March when D&C Construction Co. was awarded the $392,000 contract.
Now, however, with the renovation of the old Quonset hut by the canal on the north end of the town park, Winona Lake is boasting a new town hall with ample space to conduct the town's business.
The old offices of the town clerk, sewer collection, building inspector, police and parks departments, were tight; and the old Quonset hut, which was used primarily for storage, was not particularly appealing to the eye.
Things sure are different now, according to town clerk Retha Hicks. Hicks' office, and those of the other city departments, are spacious and comfortable. And best of all, it was done at an impressively low price.
"It's been working out very well," Hicks said during a recent tour of the renovated building. "For the amount of money we spent, to have the ability to have all the town departments together in one location - we're all just thrilled."
There still remains some landscaping items that need to be finished, but everything else is complete, she added. The entire project came in for about $39 per square foot - a remarkably low price for a building renovation.
"It's been exciting to see these changes, and how the community has pulled together on getting this done," Hicks said.
The community will have an opportunity to see for itself. The town council is hosting an open house at 7 p.m., Oct. 12, following their regularly scheduled meeting.
