Winona Lake Must Review Grant For Senior Center

Posted

WINONA LAKE - An Indiana Department of Commerce $200,000 grant, which provided funding to the "senior center" in Winona Park, will have to be retooled due to a lack of senior-related activities at the building, according to town coordinator Craig Allebach.

He said interest in the facility has come from Boys and Girls Club of Kosciusko County and an English-as-a- second language "component." If the grant is not modified to reflect these additional uses in the center, the town will have to pay for the grant.

Allebach said a 14th Street residence is being used as a multi-family house. The structure is designed as a single family dwelling and has two families "upstairs" and one in the basement in deplorable conditions. He said he would like to charge the owners with the maximum fee of $300 because of the code violation.

Proposed changes to King's Highway were discussed with engineer Larry Long.

Newly seated president Jerry Clevenger said citizens think the college should help pay for improvements if the goal is to enhance the entrance of the Grace College campus.

Also discussed again was removal of the stop sign at the fire station, making Rupe Drive a one-way west, and the possible addition of a left turn lane onto Seminary Street.

The council plans to make firm decisions regarding King's Highway within the next month.

In other business, the board:

• Approved vacation of Western Drive in Southtown Estates. The vacation was represented by Mike Reed, attorney for Investors Inc. The eighth addition has been replatted as the 10th addition. Lots 7, 8, 10 through 24 and 34 through 44 have been replatted as Lots A, B and C. The unimproved street ran through those lots. Because of adjacent wetlands, structures can be built only at the

"front" of the lots.

• Accepted Mark Workman's bid of $2,500 for the lot at 1308 Chestnut St.

• Welcomed back public works superintendent Pete O'Connell, who had been off due to health reasons.

• Reviewed a contract of service with Larry Long and Associates, which showed a 2 percent increase over last year's agreement.

• Events in Winona Lake were given as: Jan. 18, 6 to 8 p.m., gospel music performance at Rodeheaver Auditorium; Jan. 19, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Martin Luther King Celebration luncheon at Rodeheaver; Jan. 19, Lakeland Community Concert Association concert featuring Anthony and Joseph Paratore, dual pianists, in Rodeheaver; Feb. 3, noon, a senior citizens luncheon in the senior center; and March 4, 6:30 p.m., community appreciation dinner in the Grace College student recreation center.

• Set the next meeting for Monday, Jan. 26, at 7 a.m. instead of Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Board members are: Jerry Clevenger, president; Jeff Carroll, vice-president; David Delp, Rolly Ortega and John Boal. Boal was absent.
