WINONA LAKE - Winona Lake Town Council discussed the town's accomplishments for 2009 during Tuesday's meeting.
Winona Lake Town Coordinator Craig Allebach gave a slide presentation to the council on the town's accomplishments.
Allebach said to look to the town's strategic plan for 2010, he had department heads put together their accomplishments for 2009.
Allebach said the town was given a community achievement award for its Greenway artwork in 2009.
The Winona Lake Museum and Visitors center was open from May 15-October 15, and the town held its Fourth Of July Celebration that was successful.
Allebach said the town is still considering investigating installing a wastewater treatment plant in town.
The town currently is waiting to hear back from Stonehenge Golf Course's attorney to set up a meeting to discuss property easements in Stonehenge Addition.
In 2009, the town approved Winona Lake becoming a tree city and held a town clean-up day.
The town also replaced the senior center's flooring, approved the street department building a salt storage facility and redesigned the town's Web site that launched Dec. 21.
Winona Lake Parks Department held preschool fun classes, youth art classes and educational classes.
The Winona Lake Clerk-Treasurer's Office had 2,263 checks written with total expenses totalling $4,973,090. There were $2,009 receipts written totalling $5,525,232.
Winona Lake Volunteer Fire Department delivered fire prevention programs to approximately 1,500 students and individuals in 2009 and purchased a 78-foot ladder truck.
Winona Lake Police Department received a grant to purchase an in-car video camera system and purchased tasers for the department.
In other business, the council also approved board appointments for the town's redevelopment commission for 2010.
Board members include Al Disbro, Judy Mugg and Denny Daniels.
Caroline Stoll-Shanklin was appointed to the Winona Lake Housing Authority board.
The council also heard two new mailboxes will be installed in the town.
A drive-up mail box will be installed on the south side of the Winona Lake Post Office. A walk-up mail drop box will be installed under the Winona Lake Post Office's awning.
The post office boxes should be installed within the next 30 days, Allebach said.
Winona Lake resident John Elliott had suggested at the council's last meeting that the council consider installing drive-up mail boxes in the town.
The town currently has two drop off mail boxes that face away from the road and visitors have to get out of their vehicles to drop off mail.
The two current mail boxes will be removed and additional parking spaces will be created there, Allebach said.
