WINONA LAKE - Winona Lake Town Council reviewed a petition requesting the placement of dead end signs on Auditorium and Canal streets and at 12th and Canal streets Tuesday.
Jerry Nelson, Court Circle resident, presented the petition that had 27 signatures from Court Street and Auditorium Boulevard residents.
Two days after the last council meeting on Oct. 13, Nelson said he gave town coordinator Craig Allebach a petition from 23 Court Street and Auditorium Boulevard residents.
During Tuesday’s meeting he gave copies of the same petition, but with four additional names totalling 27 names.
The petition requested the placement of a dead end or no outlet sign to resolve the problem of confused drivers driving north to the end of Court Street past 12th Street on the island.
The petition stated appropriate places for the signs would be at the corners of West Canal and Auditorium Boulevard, West Canal Street and 12th Street, and 12th Street and Court Street for Court Street heading towards Rainbow Point.
Town Marshal Paul Schmitt said a sign will be posted that states “dead end” and “no outlet” on Auditorium and Canal street and at 12th and Canal streets.
Also during the meeting the council held a public hearing for the 2012 budget and adopted it.
The council also approved a donation policy form for those who donate to the town to be required to sign.
The council approved a contract with Niblock for $121,592.40 for asphalting of 10 streets including Pierceton Road, Administration Boulevard, Park Avenue, Kings Highway, 4th Street, Park Avenue, Boys City Drive, College and 5th Street, Liberty Street, and Roy Street.
Town council President Sue Gooding expressed concerns to the council that pedestrians are walking on the streets at night instead of on sidewalks.
Schmitt said pedestrians should be reminded to walk on the sidewalks.
In other business, the council approved voiding $385 in outstanding checks.
Pete O’Connell, public works director, informed the council that the sewer pumps were down in Winona Lake last week. He said four sewage plant employees from Warsaw provided three trucks and manpower to assist with getting the sewer pump running again.
O’Connell said the town currently has two leaf trucks out now.
Schmitt presented the council with reduction zones and bow hunting guidelines for Warsaw, and suggested the council look to apply the rules for Winona Lake.
The rules for Warsaw’s Deer Task Force state there be a 20-yard maximum shot and says most archers are capable of longer shots. The rules also state stand sites must be at least 70 yards away from residential property lines.
Winona Lake will review the rules and Schmitt will make a recommendation for deer rules in the town at the next council meeting.
Schmitt thanked Randy Bowman, R & B Sales owner, for donating $150 worth of candy for the police department to distribute during trick-or-treat.
Schmitt said there is a dead tree on 11th Street that will be taken down.
Upcoming events in the town include a YMCA 5K Saturday at 9 a.m. beginning at the YMCA and going on the Heritage Trail in Winona Lake; trick-or-treat Monday from 5:30-7:30 p.m.; Empty Bowls hunger awareness event in The Village at Winona Nov. 3 from noon to 2 p.m.; Winona Lake Community Dinner at Rodeheaver Auditorium Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased at the town hall; and Festival of Trees at Rodeheaver Auditorium Nov. 18-20.
