Winona Gets Community Focus Funds To Build Senior Center

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS - Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan awarded the town of Winona Lake a $200,000 Community Focus Fund grant to renovate the community building for use as a senior center.

Currently, the community building is vacant due to the relocation of the town offices to another building. The project will include various repairs to the physical structure of the building as well as a redesigned interior to meet the needs of the seniors.

"Winona Lake is making a commitment to improve the quality of life of its residents and we're proud to be a partner in that effort," said Kernan, who serves as the director of the Indiana Department of Commerce. "The local leadership needed to drive these projects should make all the communities proud. That drive will ultimately make these Indiana cities and towns even better places to live."

CFF is a federally funded grant program administered by the Indiana Department of Commerce. The funds are available to small cities, towns and counties for construction projects designed to benefit low- to moderate-income individuals or to eliminate blight in communities. Grants are awarded through competitive funding rounds to assist small communities in long-term development projects.

Eligible projects for CFF grants include infrastructure improvements, child care facilities, senior and community centers, downtown revitalization and fire stations and fire trucks. Up to $500,000 is available per applicant. A match of at least 10 percent is required from the match recipient.

Winona Lake is one of 31 communities receiving grants in the first round of funding for 2001. A total of $12.4 million will be awarded statewide.
