WINONA LAKE - Winona Lake Town Council Tuesday approved Holly Hummitch to serve as the town's senior center activities director and park activities director.

Hummitch replaces former Senior Center Activities Director Shannon Doppelt, who submitted her letter of resignation to the town two weeks ago.

Hummitch will begin her responsibilities Thursday, and her pay will be $10 an hour. She will run the park program activities and senior center activities.Town Coordinator Craig Allebach said Hummitch will work 16 to 20 hours a week during the winter, and 40 hours during the summer.

The council also reviewed an ordinance for the town's garbage pick-up service for residents. The ordinance would require Winona Lake residents who live in homes, apartments and condominiums to pay an additional $5 a month for garbage pick-up services.

The fee would be effective Jan. 1 if approved.

The town previously approved an $80,000 increase for the town garbage disposal contract. The increase is attributed to cover costs incurred from increased gas prices and landfill fees.

A public hearing on the ordinance will be held at the December council meeting.

The council also approved a $7,375.80 contract with Phend & Brown Inc., Milford, to complete road resurfacing on Western Avenue.

Phend & Brown Inc. originally milled down the wrong section of Western Drive to prepare to lay new asphalt on the street. The town decided to go ahead and do that stretch of road also for an additional $7,375.80. The price was reduced from approximately $11,000.

Town engineer Larry Long discussed a Muirfield Street reconstruction project he has been looking into.

The Muirfield Subdivision is on the south side of Pierceton Road and west of CR 275E, and includes Porthcawl and Muirfield streets, Long said.

The project would include repairing pavement on the streets and storm drainage improvements. The cost estimate for the project would be $78,930.

The council approved providing maintenance and snow plowing for roads in Autumn Hills Subdivision this winter.

Town Council President Dave Delp informed the board the holiday festival in the Village at Winona is Dec. 1.
