WINONA LAKE - The town council, in an effort to maintain a level playing field for all residents, voted Tuesday to maintain the current $200 sewer tap-on fee.
The decision was prompted by a request from residents of Canaan Estates to lower the sewer tap-on fee of $200 for its residents because inspections can be conducted on multiple homes at once, therefore lowering the cost to the city.
Councilman Harold Dunn moved to maintain the $200 fee, citing the need to be equitable to other residents who had to pay the tap fee previously.
"We need to be fair to everyone, so we should keep the fee at $200," he said.
The council also established a $6,000 construction fee for Lakeland Academy to tap into the Wooster Road sewer line.
The fee was based on the percentage of sewer pipe flow into the system from the academy.
In other business, the council heard a request from Kosciusko Development Inc. for an annual donation support of $1,000.
"We're requesting that $1,000 be placed in your 2000 budget for KDI," said Randy Vutch, treasurer of KDI. "What's good about this donation is the county matches all donations with a one-to-one match."
Councilman Randy Ruppel said KDI deserves the council's support.
"There seems to be a misconception on the part of many county residents about what KDI is and what it is all about," he said. "It's my opinion that what's good for the county is good for Winona Lake."
The council tabled the request so that it may set what level of donation the town will make during its budget proposal.
The council approved an ordinance establishing a one-way stop for southbound traffic at Pope and Walnut streets.
