WINONA LAKE – Winona Lake Town Council heard an update on the Stonehenge street improvement project Tuesday morning.
Larry Long, town engineer, said he had planned to recommend authorization for bids during the meeting.
He said a wage scale meeting was Monday for the Stonehenge street improvements, which is a prerequisite to bid the project.
Long said he could not recommend authorization for the town to seek bids during Tuesday’s meeting because the drawings have not been completed.
He will send the drawings to the council before the next meeting, and hopes to have quotes for the Stonehenge street repair at the June 12 meeting.
Long said after the council authorizes to advertise bids for Stonehenge Addition street improvements, that will give the town 3.5 months of construction this summer.
The project will then be postponed to the spring to finish it.
He said sewer lines also need to be repaired before the street work is conducted. The town needs to get quotes for the sewer line work.
Long said he has looked at curbs to put in and will go with a conventional curb that is in Heritage Lake Subdivision.
Scott Stanley, Severn Trent employee, told the council Joe Hawn, his son Nick Hawn, Eagle Scouts and Boy Scouts stained the entrance of the Heritage Trail woodrailings and sign posts Saturday.
Joe Bumbaugh, Winona Lake patrolman, informed the council his former K9, Hugo, died from cancer.
Bumbaugh said he has been working with town marshal Paul Schmitt to honor the K9 with a plaque.
Town Coordinator Craig Allebach said the town is working on ordering a plaque that will be hung in the town hall to remember and honor Hugo.
In other business, the council approved a travel request for Allebach to travel to Indianapolis May 30 to be a presenter at the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns conference on web design for smaller communities.
Allebach reminded the council the town has received recycling bins from Warsaw that are available for free to Winona Lake residents at the Winona Lake Street Department.
Allebach also informed the council that the town has applied for $12,000 in grant funding for the Greenway’s Heritage Trail.
Councilman Gregg Winn asked for an update on a limitless park and splash pad in Winona Lake Park.
The park will be able to accommodate those who are handicapped and is proposed to be built in Winona Lake.
Winona Lake Park Board has approved both parks.
Allebach said Kosciusko Leadership Academy graduates won $1,000 to put toward developing the splash pad.
Holly Hummitch, Winona Lake parks director, said tentative plans for the limitless park and splash pad are for grant funding to be done this year.
A fundraiser for the park and pad will be in spring 2013, and the park and pad is proposed to be built in spring 2014.
Upcoming events in the town include the annual art fair June 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Village at Winona; Remnant Trust Exhibits June 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Northern Lake Festival at the Winona Lake Park June 10; MasterWorks Festival June 17 to July 14; Warsaw Breakfast Optimist Triathlon June 23 in Winona Lake; Patriotic Pops Concert and Winona Lake Great 4th of July Celebration and the Warsaw-Winona Lake fireworks at dusk June 30 over Winona Lake.
