WINONA LAKE - Winona Lake Clerk-Treasurer Retha Hicks recently assisted with leading training for Indiana's newly elected town and clerk-treasurer positions.
The training was Jan. 14-16 at the Westin Hotel meeting rooms and the RCA Dome Conference Center, Indianapolis.
Approximately 720 Indiana government leaders attended the training that is held every four years.Participants included Indiana mayors, newly elected councilmen, town officials and newly elected town councilmen.
"The purpose of the training was to teach newly elected officials in Indiana about their functions and responsibilities as government leaders," Hicks said.
Hicks led the training with seven government leaders, including town managers and clerk-treasurers from Fishers, Munster, Elkhart and Highland.
Hicks attended the training with Winona Lake Town Coordinator Craig Allebach and newly elected town councilman Terry Howie.
Hicks serves as president of the Indiana League of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers and this was her first time for leading.
"I was honored to be able to teach things I have learned to newly elected clerk-treasurers in Indiana," Hicks said.
Hicks represented clerk-treasurers on a panel that focused on the legal structure and framework of municipalities and the function and responsibilities of different municipal officials. Other topics covered included appointment authority and officeholder's teamwork to accomplish community objectives.
She led another panel where clerk and clerk-treasurer's office duties were discussed.
