COLUMBIA CITY -ÊA South Whitley man recently pleaded guilty to sexual battery and received a 1-1/2-year sentence in Whitley County.

Michael T. Burns, 46, of Calhoun Street, South Whitley, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual battery and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in October and was sentenced Monday.

The case stems from an incident when Burns gave alcohol to a 17-year-old boy and then tried to fondle the boy as he slept. The boy was on an athletic team Burns coached. Burns also assisted at Whitko High School athletic events.

Whitley County Judge James Heuer sentenced Burns to six months in jail and one year of home detention for the charges. Burns also must pay a $500 fine and register as a sex offender.
