Heart Of Gold awards are given out through Kosciusko County Community Foundation.
"It helps recognize people who do great things for other people," said KCCF Executive Director Suzie Light.
Whitehead was nominated by Vera Shepherd, whose son is employed at Whimet.
Shepherd and several other employees spoke at the event about Whimet's policy of hiring "second-chance" employees and its willingness to hire people without formal training.
Paul Berkey, a laser technician at Whimet, served as a de facto emcee and read letters from anonymous employees thanking Whitehead for the chance he gave them.
Whimet Inc. is a metal-finishing company that serves the orthopedic industry. It employs around 65 people.
The award presented to Whitehead was made at Whimet while Mavron, We-Fab and Instru-Med all helped manufacture it.
Every employee's name was etched onto the award.
"We don't always do things for the recognition," said Whitehead. "But it's nice to get it. We give people second chances. I know I've had second, third and fourth chances in my life."
