Wheel Tax Amendment Fails At County Council Meeting

Posted
An amendment to alter the Kosciusko County Wheel Tax for 2017 was defeated at the county council meeting Thursday night.
The council has been discussing the Wheel Tax for some time, but at the May meeting an amendment was presented to reduce the Wheel Tax for 3,000-pound trailers from $40 to $15. It did not pass at the May meeting.
The second reading for the amendment then was given at the council’s Thursday night meeting. It needed to have a majority to pass, but with only two voting to approve it, three against it and two councilmen not present, the amendment again failed.
If the Wheel Tax was going to be amended for 2017, it had to be done by July 1. Since the amendment didn’t pass last night, the Wheel Tax will stay as is for next year.
In other business, the county council:
• Discussed several abatements. Due to filing deadlines, some had to be tabled until the July 14 meeting.
• Heard a presentation by Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer regarding the Stellar Communities application. The city is finalist, and the designation will be announced Aug. 18 at the Indiana State Fair.
Among the projects that are part of Warsaw’s application are a roundabout at Argonne Road and Winona Avenue, neighborhood and home improvements and Ker Park improvements.
• Heard a presentation by Lyn Crighton, The Watershed Foundation.
