NORTH WEBSTER - Hoping to avoid accidents and other traffic problems, the North Webster Town Council voted Wednesday to place stop signs at the intersection of West Washington and Blaine streets.
Motorists on Washington Street have a stop sign, but visibility at the intersection is poor and drivers must pull out rather far onto Blaine Street to see if the road is clear. Town Marshal Jerry Craig said traffic in the area has increased since Precision Tool opened near there.
Councilman Ken Wagner said he has received several complaints regarding the intersection and is in favor of making it a three-way stop.
Adding stop signs at new locations requires an ordinance. The council will have one drawn up and will likely sign it at next month's meeting.
In other business, the council acknowledged receipt of the $400,000 Indiana Department of Commerce grant the town applied for to aid in funding the senior housing complex at Epworth Forest. That money will be paired with a $500,000 Housing Finance Authority grant for construction of 20 units.
Because of the delay in obtaining funding, construction - which was anticipated to begin this fall - will not begin until spring, with an occupancy goal of August.
The town has requested that applicant information for housing in the complex be provided to the clerk-treasurer. That information has not been received, but an announcement will be made when it is available.
In other matters, the council:
Updated a 1968 ordinance banning the placement of mobile homes within town limits, unless they are in mobile home parks. A penalty of $50 per day will be assessed for violators of this ordinance.
Approved renewal of a contract for radio maintenance with J&K Communications, Columbia City, at an 8 percent increase. The cost for maintaining police department radios for 1997 will be $776.
Appointed Robert Stevens to the library board.
A special meeting to discuss possible annexation is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 27. The next regular meeting is at 7 p.m. Dec. 11, with an end-of-year meeting set for noon Dec. 23. All will take place in the town hall.
