WCHS Students Collect Clothing For Hurricane Victims

Part of the mission at Warsaw Community Schools is to enrich the lives of others, according to Warsaw Community High School Principal Troy Akers.
“Our values and strategic objectives also point to service. WCHS has thrived in our response to service and relief efforts of the needy after natural disaster,” he said.
Three years ago, the high school raised more than $5,000 for the Red Cross in its Hope for Haiti campaign. Last year, it filled a semi-trailer after the tornadoes in southern Indiana.
“What are our students and staff doing today? Today, millions of people are still without power after the hurricane struck the East Coast and moved inland nearly two weeks ago. To add to an already perilous situation, a ‘Northeaster’ came into the area this week dumping several feet of snow and more flooding. Many people are working in freezing conditions while trying to rebuild their lives,” Akers said.
Students and staff completed a two-day blitz Wednesday and Thursday.
“The results were astounding,” Akers said. “Over 1,000 pieces of winter weather wear were collected from students, staff and community members. This included coats, jackets, stocking hats and gloves. Many of these items were articles hanging in closets at home that were no longer being used.”
He continued, “Following the collection, these items were bagged by the WCHS Student Council members and picked up by the Warsaw-based World Compassion Network. These items have been trucked to the New York City/Jersey Shore area and are expected to arrive by the weekend.
“Just another way that Warsaw Community High School students, staff and community are ‘Moving our Mission Forward!’”
