BLOOMINGTON – Ten Kelley Scholars were selected by the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.

Among those awarded the prestigious honor was Warsaw Community High School graduate Eric Smolen.

The Kelley Scholars, all incoming freshmen this fall who intend to major in business at I.U. Bloomington, will receive full tuition and fees, a stipend for living expenses and funding for academic activities.

The award is for four years and has an annual value of more than $16,000 for recipients who are Indiana residents. The value for non-residents is $35,000.

According to information from a news release, The Kelley Scholars Program is funded by a $23 million gift from E.W. Kelley and his family, made to I.U. in fall 1997. Indiana University named its school of business for the Kelley family in acknowledgement of the gift.

This year’s class of scholars was selected from a group of more than 500 students admitted to I.U.. They were invited to apply for the program because of their academic records. The application included references, a high school transcript, several personal statements on a variety of topics and an essay.

Eric is the son of David and Barb Smolen, Warsaw. He also was a recipient of an I.U. Excellence Scholarship.

As a student at WCHS, he was a member of the varsity baseball team, served as president of the WCHS Octagon Club and was a National Merit Commended Scholar.

Smolen plans to study marketing and international business.
