SYRACUSE – Wawasee High School Student Council, along with other schools and community organizations, are teaming up to host a fundraiser for Relay For Life.
Relay For Life is an organization through the American Cancer Society that is trying to find a cure for cancer, according to a news release from Wawasee student Ayla Torres.
The fundraiser is scheduled for the night of Jan. 31, during a Wawasee vs. Concord boys basketball game.
Last year the event raised $4,000, and this year organizers are hoping to raise $5,000.
Before the game a spaghetti dinner and bake sale is being planned from 4 to 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.
Before the varsity game, a Wawasee teacher will talk about her recent experience with cancer. Then, during halftime, some Wawasee middle school teachers and Milford Middle school teachers will play a five-minute basketball match.
During the game, Wawasee and Concord Relay shirts, ice cream and raffle tickets will be sold. Wawasee cheerleaders will pass the Relay buckets around during third quarter for donations.
Local hospitals also will have booths for cancer awareness.
Torres said, “Our goal this year is to fill every seat in the gym with members of the community to join together and end the fight against cancer. All money raised will stay in Kosciusko County.”
