Wawasee School Board Says Goodbye To Winchester

Posted
SYRACUSE - The Wawasee School Board remembered one of its own Tuesday night during their monthly meeting.

It was a meeting of remembrance for Dallas Winchester. The former school board president and Milford resident lost his fight to cancer on Thanksgiving Day at 48.

Fellow board members remembered Winchester fondly for his devotion to the school board and his concern for energy conservation.

Wawasee Superintendent Dr. Thomas Edington recalled Winchester always being the first to the meetings and the last to leave if there was work to be done or questions to be answered.

Mike Wilson will begin his term as school board resident Jan. 1.

Mark Mitchell and Dr. Bob Cockburn gave a report concerning the status of Positive Behavior Intervention Support.

The program is an organized system of behavioral trends that can contribute to student's behavior.

Data looked at several factors from gender and ethnic backgrounds to the physical location that infractions take place. Grade and special education levels were also considered. Data was collected from elementary schools within the district. Results suggested improvement in behavioral trends over the past year. The program is expanding to higher grades.

A $500 grant from Dekko Foundation to benefit area music programs was announced Tuesday night.

The North Webster American Legion Post also contributed flags to the middle school.

Edington mentioned that Wawasee Middle School has become involved in the United States Olympic Committee's Worldfit.org

According to the website, the program assigns middle schools to a particular Olympian from the area.

The Olympian will speak at the school annually and the students will do their part by participating in a World fit walk.

Students will begin the walk at the start of spring and continue daily walks for six weeks. Student mileage will be tracked and students will be presented with certificates at the end of the six weeks.

In other news, the school board is looking at energy saving options for North Webster Elementary School and Wawasee Middle School.

They are the newest buildings in the corporation. The board hopes to have a recommendation by late winter or early spring on the matter. The board is considering general energy saving methods and geothermal in the schools. They have not considered wind technology as of yet.
