Wawasee Rental Fees To Increase Next Year

SYRACUSE - Most of the textbook rental fees for Wawasee Schools will increase for the 2004-05 school year.

The fees were approved by the Wawasee Community School Corp. Board of Trustees Tuesday.

In addition to the textbook rental, the fees also include student insurance and a nominal fee for registration folder for kindergarten through grade three.

Kindergarten textbook rental was approved at $55.25, compared to $44.20 for the 2003-04 school year. Reading Recovery is set at $70.45 for 2004-05, $1.05 more than 2003-04.

Grade one is $98.85, compared to $96.50 for 2003-04; grade two, $90.30, compared to $87.50; and grade three, $105.05, compared to $101.05 last school year.

Grade four is the only grade with a decrease in textbook rental. For the 2004-05 school year, textbook rental is $94.85, compared to $101.25 for 2003-04.

Other grades and textbook rental fees are: grade five, $101.35, up from $95.80; grade six, $100.20, up from $94.35; grade seven, $98.95, up from $93.25; and grade eight, $92.95, up from $91.05.

In other business, the school board:

• Approved the advertisement of bids for the purchase of four standard 66-passenger buses and one bus for special needs students.

• Approved a $2,572.29 donation to Syracuse Elementary School from the Parents, Teachers & Friends Organization for the handicapped walk, ramp and rail.

• Approved a $2,500 scholarship donation from IKON Office Solutions.

• Approved a resolution allowing revenue from vending machines at Wawasee High School to be placed in the principal's extracurricular account to be used at the principal's discretion to benefit students and/or faculty.

• Heard parents can pre-enroll their students online at the Wawasee schools Web site, which will make registration go faster this fall.

• Heard a special board meeting will be Aug. 3 for a budget work session; a special board meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 24 for the budget hearing.

• Approved the resignation of Wawasee High School math teacher Kathy Boggs; WHS language arts teacher Stephanie Kromer; Milford Elementary School teacher Heather Clevenger; WHS language arts teacher Bryan Waltz; and Milford band and choir teacher Adrian Hartsough.

• Approved the employment of Hope Bechtel as the Wawasee Middle School band and choir teacher; Stacy McCauley, Syracuse School first grade teacher; and Amy Heavin as the WHS language arts teacher.

Board members present Tuesday were Marion Acton, Brian Dawes and George Gilbert. Not present were Mary Lou Dixon and Dallas Winchester. The board meets at 7 p.m. in the administration building, Syracuse, on the second Tuesday of every month.
