SYRACUSE – Wawasee High School Principal Mike Schmidt’s resignation was approved Tuesday night at a special school board meeting. He was placed on administrative leave May 12. A spokesperson at that time said the situation was under investigation, but no further comments on that investigation were made. Schmidt’s resignation is effective June 30. Wawasee School Board President Rebecca Linnemeier said that Schmidt initially resigned May 20, but wanted to wait until after graduation to announce it. A press release from Wawasee Community School Corporation states, “Schmidt submitted his resignation on May 20, 2016, citing personal reasons. He asked the board to hold his resignation until after school was over for the 2015-2016 school year to ensure his children could finish the year strong. We wish the best for Mr. Schmidt and his future endeavors and look forward to hearing about his future successes.” He has been principal at Wawasee High School since 2013. It is unclear when a replacement for Schmidt will be found. Two other WCSC employees had their resignations approved by the board Tuesday. Those were Christie Holst, student services coordinator at North Webster Elementary, and Beth Ward, functional skills teacher at North Webster. Tom Dickerson will be the health and physical education teacher at Wawasee Middle School. The next Wawasee School Board meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
