Indiana American Water Co. employees will flush hydrants in Winona Lake and Warsaw this month to get rid of rust and debris that collects from water mains.
"There sometimes is a build-up of rust that comes off water mains, and the purpose of the flushing is to get rid of debris so there is not a build-up in the hydrants," said Brenda Sumpter, general service clerk for Indiana American Water Co.
Sumpter said the department completes the flushing twice a year, during the spring and fall.
Customers may experience periods of discoloration and pressure fluctuation during the flushing period, Sumpter said.
Customers are asked to avoid doing laundry during scheduled hydrant flushing times in their towns to avoid getting bad water in their pipes.
The flushing in Winona Lake will be Sept. 15 from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Areas include Argonne Road going east to CR 250E, and U.S. 30E and Old 30E, including paths of Deerfield.
Six areas in Warsaw will be flushed Sept. 16 from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., including Parker Street and Gables Addition, Kosciusko Community Hospital to Husky Trail, Boggs and Phillips Addition to Zimmer Road, West Lake Street to West Winona Avenue, Hendricks Street to East Fort Wayne Street, and North Detroit Street to Argonne Road.
The hydrant flushing will continue Sept. 22 from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Hand Avenue to South Buffalo Street, West Center Street to Warsaw Community High School, CR 200N to CR 250N and Boeing Road to CR 150W.
The last day for hydrant flushing will be Sept. 23 from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. from South Buffalo Street to CR 200S (Ranch Road area), South Indiana Street to East Winona and Smith streets, Arthur Street to East Clark Street from North Detroit Street to Cleveland Street.
