Waste District Offers Tire, Appliance Amnesty Day

Posted

Appliance and Tire Amnesty Day will be Sept. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon, Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District Director Marsha Eikenberry announced Tuesday.

The district also held a public hearing Tuesday for the 2000 budget. The estimated budget will be $289,615, with an estimated maximum fund to be raised of $55,526. The tax levy is estimated to be approximately $0.006, though Eikenberry said the official levy will not be available until November.

In other business, the district held a county-wide compost meeting Aug. 19. Representatives from North Webster, Syracuse, Winona Lake and the Warsaw Street Department attended.

Eikenberry said the grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management was approved at only $98,000, not the $121,000 requested for the countywide compost project.

"Somewhere in the process, they determined they don't give grants for over $100,000. They dropped the Bobcat from the list and they dropped the educational money," Eikenberry told the district board.

She said the compost project is something she wants to do because it will be beneficial for the county.

Of the meeting, Edna Gamble, Winona Lake councilwoman, said, "I thought it was great. The information I passed on to my people, it was great."

Eikenberry said IDEM was skeptical of funding the equipment and she was disappointed with their decision.

"I think the composting will be a long process but we need to do it and do it right," said Eikenberry.

District Education Coordinator Sue Studebaker said she is working on the district sponsoring KidsMatter Theater for third- and fourth-graders of South Whitley, Pierceton, North Webster, Mentone, Burket and Akron on Sept. 13 and 14. The group performs a program called "Planet Protectors" and promotes recycling.

Studebaker said any program the district presents to local schools "has got to be a quality program and not a waste of time. Teachers can't afford a waste of time." She said the Planet Protectors is a worthwhile program.

The district city advisory board meets at noon at 112 E. Center St., Warsaw, and the district board meets at 1:30 p.m., on the fourth Tuesday of every month.
